About
Harold Porcher (B. 1964, Charleston, SC) studied biology and fine arts at The College of Charleston. In 1989 he moved to Brooklyn, New York. His career in art galleries and auction houses has strengthened his knowledge of art history giving a wide array of influences to his own art concepts.
Harold Porcher’s drawings begin as automatic and non-objective gestures. The lines are then carefully modified to create forms, then pigments are applied. These gestures contain muscle memory of various images and fonts laid down over a lifetime by the artist’s hand. Hints of influences such as Dr. Seuss, Arshile Gorky, and Chinese calligraphy might be discernible. Colors are selected by the artist for their push-pull qualities when juxtaposed against one another. Forms advancing and receding based on color relation is key in achieving the intended illusion. Harold sees his artistic endeavors as a goal to strive toward and not a destination. A riddle with no answer, as art is in the eye of the beholder and the artist merely suggests a direction.
Currently Harold lives and creates in Bloomfield, NJ, while continuing his career as a fine art specialist at Swann Galleries, NY.
